More and more, foodborne illness is in the news. According to Health Canada, approximately 10,000 cases of foodborne diseases are reported every year, but food safety experts believe more than two million people become ill without knowing or reporting it. These illnesses cost Canadian health services, industry and society an estimated one billion dollars annually.

Food Safety Learning Program for Grades 4 to 7
April 23, 2001, Ottawa – Food safety is serious business, but it can be taught in a fun and interesting manner. Today, the Canadian Partnership for Consumer Food Safety Education launched the Grades 4 to 7 Learning Program to educate children about the importance of safe food handling.

Support Continues for Consumer Food Safety Education
August 28, 2000, OTTAWA - Representatives from consumer groups, the food industry, environmental, health and government organizations attended the third Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Partnership for Consumer Food Safety Education held this summer. Elections for the 2000/2001 Board of Directors, Executive Committee and Officers were held, the 1999/2000 Annual Report was tabled and accepted, and the business plan and 2000/2001 budget were presented. FightBAC!® This Barbeque Season
OTTAWA, June 29, 2000 - The summertime scent of charcoal will be in the air as barbeques are fired up for long weekend celebrations. At this time of year, cooking for family and friends is always fun, but consumers must be sure to help protect against uninvited guests. The Canadian Partnership for Consumer Food Safety Education wants to remind consumers that cooking outdoors is no reason to forget about foodborne illness.

FightBAC!® for kids !
April 13, 2000, Ottawa – A fun and exciting program has been launched to teach children about safe food handling in the kitchen. This kid-friendly interactive program, targeted at children from Kindergarten to Grade 3 (ages 5 to 9), is sponsored by the Canadian Partnership for Consumer Food Safety Education. The materials supplement the messages of the FightBAC!® Campaign which the Partnership launched in November 1998.

OTTAWA, December 20, 1999 - During this festive season, serving a meal to family and friends is a tradition in many Canadian households. With millions of meals being prepared, consumers are reminded to practice safe food handling techniques when preparing these holiday food delights.

August 19, 1999, OTTAWA - Over twenty consumer, food industry, environmental, health and government organizations attended the second Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Partnership for Consumer Food Safety Education held earlier this summer. Elections for the 1999/2000 Board of Directors, Executive Committee and Officers were held, the 1998/99 Annual Report was tabled and accepted, and budgets for communications and education activities were approved. Ottawa, November 26, 1998 - A unique coalition of Canada’s food industries, consumer and health groups, and government today launched a new, national public awareness campaign on food safety in the home kitchen.

Government and Industry Collaborate to Promote Food Safety Awareness
OTTAWA, May 14, 1998 - Almost 70 per cent of Canadian consumers rank bacteria that may cause food poisoning or illness as their number one food safety concern. A new consumer survey by Environics also found that only three quarters of Canadians wash their hands and cooking surfaces before and during meal preparation at home. The survey asked consumers about their knowledge of safe food handling practices and to rate their own food handling practices in the home.
